Metals Unlimited is a supplier of most metal alloys in most mill forms that fall into the category of not “off the shelf” items. There are many medium to large stocking metals distributors that offer a wide variety of commodity type items. We offer our services to supply items that in most cases must be produced to exact customer specifications such as flat wire.

Depending on the metal alloy, size, temper and tolerances very few people if any keep flat wire stocks. This is true in copper flat wire as it would be highly impractical to try to stock sizes that would meet many end user requirements. Flat wire is produced by starting with a round wire and processing it through flattening equipment to obtain both the thickness and width needed. There are a variety of edges that can be supplied from a square corner (similar to a slit strip) all the way to a fully rounded edge.

After the wire is flattened to size the temper or “hardness” of the item will be determined by the amount of cold working the metal has gone through. This amount of cold working is determined in aluminum flat wire as well as all other alloys, by the specified temper of the end user. If the temper required is soft or annealed then the final operation is for the flat wire to be annealed in a heat controlled oven, either in a batch of strand annealing operation.
