Miguel Chinchilla Varona & Associates, Incorporated was founded in 1948 to provide sugar technology to sugar factories. Initially services were rendered in Cuba, but soon thereafter services were extended to include other countries in the Western Hemisphere and The Philippines.

In August 1960 the decision was made to suspend operations in Cuba. At that time the company was performing Consulting services on a permanent basis for 36 sugar factories having a total production of 1,575,000 tons of sugar per year. This amounted to approximately 25% of the Cuban sugar production.

Clients at that time ranged from the 'Compañia Azucarera Atlantica del Golfo' which owned six sugar factories with a combined daily grinding capacity of 43,500 tons of cane, and the 'Sucesion de Falla', with seven sugar factories and a combined daily grinding capacity of 37,500 tons, to 'Central Puerto' with a grinding capacity of 1,250 tons per day.

From 1960 to date it has performed services in Florida, Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, The Philippines, Bolivia and Pakistan.

Miguel Chinchilla Varona & Associates has been a major technical factor in increasing the production of the Mexican sugar industry by engineering the design of three new factories and expansion programs for fourteen existing factories.

The company has designed eight complete new sugar factories, Talisman in Florida (1961), Zapoapita-Panuco in Mexico (1965), Ingenio Ponciano Arriaga (El Naranjo) in Mexico (1973), and san Esteban in El Salvador (1974). More recently the company designed La Grecia (Acensa) in Honduras (1975), Tala in Mexico (1981), Chaparrastique in El Salvador (1982) and Pringamosa in the Dominican Republic (2000). The original designs were made keeping in mind future increases in capacity and are considered excellent examples of layouts for sugar factories. Several outstanding expansion projects have been carried out in Mexico such as; El Potrero, La Margarita, Primavera, and Motzorongo. In Florida, Okeelanta which is presently grinding 20,000 tons of cane per day.

The company also does sugar refinery work, having designed the 600 ton per day refinery at Okeelanta and has worked in By-Products operations such as the expansion of the Furfural plant at Central Romana and the installation of a 120,000 liter per day ethanol distillery at Palo Gordo in Guatemala.
