In 1958, a short time after returning from the Korean War, Richard Sensenig decided that he wanted something more for his family. Born in 1933, during the heart of the Great Depression, he and his siblings grew up in relative poverty, working odd jobs for local farmers and in the local shoe factory in order to help feed the family of seven. Drafted into the Army, he served in the Korean War from 1953 to 1954; and when the hostilities ended, he was then transferred state side. After being released from the service in 1955 he learned the roofing trade. Three years later, he foundedRichard L. Sensenig Company on August 1, 1958. From the beginning, he was joined by his brother Victor. Another brother Edward, joined them a few months later; and they started installing commercial and residential roofing in and around the Ephrata area. The company grew slowly at first. In 1961, when the company was six employees strong, they were joined by Richard's brother-in-law, Forrest Wealand. They incorporated in 1965 when the company had about 12 people on the payroll.

As the company continued to grow and expand, its emphasis and expertise became more focused in the commercial and industrial roofing and sheet metal markets. Their reputation for quality and service expanded and customers started requesting more from the sheet metal craftsmen. Orders started coming in for customized stainless steel potato chip fryers, radiator covers and many other metal items that could not be bought off the shelf. As a result, in 1985, the Industrial Metals division was officially founded to service the local manufacturing sector's needs for custom metal fabrication. Since that time the Industrial Metals division has expanded to not only include custom fabrications, but also structural steel and miscellaneous metals fabrication and installation as well.

In 1990 Richard's three sons, Kevin, Cory and Kirby Sensenig became part of the business after working in almost every capacity throughout the company during the late 70's and 80's. They started their working careers part time during their summer breaks, sweeping floors and mowing the grass. Once of age, they spent their days installing roofing and sheet metal in order to learn the business from the bottom up.

In 2008, 50 years after Richard L. Sensenig Company was founded, their employee base is over 80 people strong. The company's second generation management team attributes its success to the hard work and dedication of its entire staff. The average tenure of Richard L. Sensenig Company's employee team is nearly 18 years. 'Our employees are our greatest asset' is a saying echoed by the entire management team.
