Gustaf N. Emerson, grandfather and childhood idol to Paul G. Emerson II, is born in Worcester, Massachusetts. Known as a masterful artist, Gustaf produces thousands of paintings over his lifetime.Van Craeynest is founded by Roger Van Craeynest in San Francisco, a house dedicated to the tradition of craftsmanship and apprenticeship.Paul G. Emerson II, working as a Perfusionist, enrolls in gemology and diamond buying classes as a side career and travels to Africa and South America as a rough diamond buyer.Paul II purchases what was originally Clifford Farrar, Inc. on State Street, and it becomes Emerson & Farrar, maintaining the reputation for quality that Farrar was known forPaul’s eldest son, Paul III, begins training to be Master Jeweler. His training includes a one-year apprenticeship with Larry Van Craeynest and other Master Jewelers, training at the The New Approach School For Jewelers in Franklin, Tennessee, followed by an additional two-year apprenticeship.Van Craeynest's original home on 657 Mission Street in San Francisco is relocated to the downtown Redlands location with the help of a rickety 100-year-old elevator, specialty equipment, lifts and cranes, and several trucks.
