What is Aluminum Anodizing?

Anodizing helps extend the life of aluminum by creating a chemically stable protective finish to make it resistant to corrosion and abrasion. It also enchances the cosmetic look of aluminum extrusions by using a variety of colors and mechanic.

Benefits

  • Improved apprearance - abrasion resistant
  • RoHS compliant
  • Non-toxic
  • Chemically stable - will not decompose
  • Colorfast
  • Resistant to chipping and peeling
  • Cost-effective

The Process

Anodizing is an electro-chemical process that forms a durable, oxide coat on the surface of aluminum extrusions. Anodizing is accomplished by immersing aluminum tubes or extruded shapes in a tank containing an acid-based electrolyte and an electric current is passed through the solution. The aluminum extrusion serves as the anode, the tank and the cathode. The electrolyte releases oxygen ions at the surface of the profile, which immediately combines with the surface aluminum to form a hard aluminum oxide film.

  • Sulfuric Anodizing Type II - Mil-A-8625(Clear or colors)

Sulfuric anodizing is the most common method for anodizing and is well suited for applications where harness, resistance and abrasion are required. This type of anodizing produces comparatively thick, transparent and absorptive oxide film, suitable for receiving both organic and inorganic dyes, and metal oxides for electrolytic color.

  • Hard Coat Anodizing Type III - Mil-A-8625 (Clear, gray or black)

Hardcoat anodizing produces a very thick coat that is more resistant to abrasion and provides a smoother and harder surface.

  • Bright Dip

Bright dip anodizing is a process where aluminum is chemically polished to bring out more brightnesss and bold colors in cosmetics applications. It also will help protect the aluminum against scratching, fading and corrosion.

  • Chemical Film Coating (Clear & Gold)

Chemical film anodizing is a process where a chromate conversion coat is used to protect the aluminum from corrosion, while still maintaining conductivity. It also can be used to improve adhesion for future paints or primers.
