R. M. Johnson & Sons

10 S. College Avenue, Salem, VA 24153 , Virginia, United States | Precious Metals

Our business began as a wholesale jewelry repair business in 1978 as R.M. Johnson Jewelry Company by my husband, the late Robert M. 'Bob' Johnson, II. The company was renamed R.M. Johnson & Sons in 1992 when we opened our first retail store at 5 South College Avenue in Salem. At that time, Jewelers Bob and Tina did repair work for 7 retail jewelry businesses as well as repairs for our own walk-in customers. We moved our business across the street to its present location in 1998 and the focus was redirected towards providing prompt repair service and custom jewelry design services to our customer base. We wanted to put our own customers' needs first, so we slowly began scaling back the wholesale side of our business.  When Bob passed away suddenly in 2005, I assumed responsibility for running the family business. Our son, Zack, joined the business in 2012 and is busy developing bench skills and designing one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces just like his father before him. In the summer of 2014, we completely remodeled the jewelry store in order to create a better experience for our growing clientele. The centerpiece and the 'heart' of the store is a jeweler's loft on a beautiful curved mezzanine where our customers can still see their repair and design work being performed. Other amenities include a dedicated point-of-sale and repair counter, a design and consultation area and easily accessible displays. The infusion of much more natural light and a self-service coffee bar make this an even more welcoming and happy place to do business.

The family and staff at R.M. Johnson & Sons Jewelers wishes to thank you, our loyal customers, for your support through the good times and the difficult times. Our newly-designed store is for you and a tribute to Bob Johnson, the man who began it all and whose legacy lives on. If you haven't yet met us, we invite you to join us as our company evolves into a more modern, engaging, second-generation jewelry store.  STAFF  Tina Light, Registered Jeweler, has been employed as Bench Jeweler since 1992. Tina has received many certifications over the years from the American Gem Society. She performs a wide variety of jewelry repairs and specializes in pearl restringing, appraisals and helping our customers redesign jewelry from their existing pieces.  Zack Johnson is also a Bench Jeweler and is perfecting his skills on our laser welder. He is currently studying towards being able to carve waxes, make molds and perform lost-wax casting.

Zack is also our engraver and chief eyeglass welder (yes, we repair glasses too!) His ever-growing portfolio of custom jewelry is both impressive and breathtaking. Zack has been active in the Salem community as a Boy Scout and earned his Eagle Scout in 2009.  Jane Johnson is President of R.M. Johnson & Sons and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the business. She has also been serving as an elected member of Salem City Council since 2004. She is currently a member of the Rotary Club of Salem, Chairwoman of the Roanoke Valley-Allegheny Regional Commission, Vice-Chair of the Metropolitan Planning Organization, Board Member of the Blue Ridge Mountains Council, Boys Scouts of America, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra.  COMMUNITY  R.M. Johnson & Sons Jewelers partners with many community service organizations. Recent support has been given to the Salem Museum Capital Campaign, the American Heart Association's 'Go Red For Women' luncheon, the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life event in Salem, CHIP, Blue Ridge Autism Awareness Center and the Roanoke Symphony.
