Types of Appraisals

There are several types of appraisals that the appraiser will encounter in the performance of his duties. Each type has some differing and some similar characteristics. In the sections that follow, we have tried to define each of the recognized types and to explain some of the nuances encountered with performing such an appraisal. It should be remembered that an appraisal is:

• First a statement, as to the authenicity, quality, design, and value of a piece of property, based and supported by training, equipment, and experience in the field of jewelry appraising; and secondly....
• A written statement, inpendently and impartially prepared by a qualified appraiser, setting forth an opinion of the defined value of an adequately described property as of a specipic date; supported by the presentation and analysis of relative market information.

The public has a need for appraisals in order to:

• Obtain insurance.
• Settle inheritance,  probate, or estate requirements.
• Substantiate the fairness of the price of an item being considered by purchase or already purchased.
• Confirm another appraiser's evaluation and valuation of an item.

• Gemstone identification,  grading,  measurement and weight calculation/estimation.
• Verification of gemological laboratory reports whenever possible.
• Fully researched valuation at the appropriate market level.
• Identification of designer or manufacture,  whenever possible.
• Complete professional cleaning and inspection of mounting.
• An explanation of value,  along with the intent (appropriate use) of the appraisal document.
