We serve more than 72,000 members and 90,000 locations in Brunswick and Columbus Counties and small parts of Bladen and Robeson counties.  We are the second largest electric co-op in North Carolina, and have 161 employees at office locations in Supply, Whiteville and Southport/ Oak Island.

The primary mission of Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation shall be to provide safe, reliable, affordable power and energy for its members in the areas served by the Cooperative at the lowest cost consistent with sound economy and good management.  To participate in activities with other organizations: National, State, and County, as well as local; either rural or urban, in an effort to promote cooperative services and community and economic development.

We've been delivering on that mission since 1939 and your elected board of directors, staff and all employees are dedicated to serving you with integrity, innovation, accountability and commitment to community.

BEMC HISTORY

In 2014 Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation celebrated 75 years of providing safe, reliable and affordable electricity to our members.
From our original incorporation in 1939, your co-op has grown to be the second largest electric co-op in NC and the 35th largest in the nation.

COOPERATIVE PRINCIPLES

Voluntary and Open Membership

Cooperatives are voluntary organizations, open to all persons able to use their services and willing to accept the responsibilities of membership, without gender, social, racial, political or religious discrimination.

Democratic Member Control

Each member has one vote to elect the board of directors, which is accountable to the membership.

Members’ Economic Participation

All members have an economic stake in the business based on their purchases from the co-op.  When it is financially prudent, the board of directors can authorize a return of those capital credits to members.

Our business structure: We are a locally owned and operated not-for-profit corporation, owned by those we serve. The board of directors is elected from the membership and works closely with professional management staff.
