MEET OUR MEMBERS
CIPCO is Iowa's largest cooperative energy provider and as a member-owned, not-for-profit electric cooperative, we generate and transmit power to our 13 member-owned rural electric cooperatives and associations. The service territory of our member systems stretches 300 miles diagonally across Iowa. Our members in turn distribute power to nearly 320,000 Iowans in 58 counties, serving more than 12,000 commercial and industrial accounts.
Environmental
CIPCO takes the role of environmental stewardship very seriously. For decades, we have been making investments in new technology for our electric generation and transmission systems to reduce the environmental impact. We have a long history of environmental compliance as well as an internal audit program that has confirmed our accountability and responsibility in the environmental arena. CIPCO maintains and abides by the permit requirements for both air emissions and water resources that we use. Shown at right is Walter Scott Energy Center #4 which utilizes the latest environmental air quality control system with state-of-the-art pollution controls to keep emissions in check.
The safety and health of CIPCO employees is of paramount importance. All employees participate in monthly safety meetings and look for opportunities that will make the workplace safer. We take great pride in the fact that injuries are few and if injuries occur, they are thoroughly investigated and used as a learning opportunity for all.
CIPCO also carefully examines close call/near miss incidents and utilizes an incident/injury prevention program called Stop-Think-Observe-Proceed (STOP). The STOP initiative is designed to encourage employees to share examples of incidents when they have identified a hazard, the danger it posed, and what was done to eliminate it.
It is important that we keep informed on safety requirements and trends in our industry, therefore CIPCO is an active member of:
• National Safety Council
• Iowa-Illinois Safety Council
• National Fire Protection Association
• Iowa Electric Utility Safety and Training Association
We conduct facility inspections at our generation stations and conduct field observations of transmission operations work practices. Our efforts are designed to establish a work environment for our employees as safe as we can make it. The standard of performance is high, but CIPCO has repeatedly proven that we are up to the task.
Central Iowa Power Cooperative (CIPCO) is Iowa’s largest cooperative energy provider since 1946. Our members serve a population of nearly 300,000 rural and urban residents and approximately 12,000 commercial and industrial accounts.
Membership status is given to the 13 rural electric cooperatives and associations with an elected representative from each serving on the CIPCO board of directors. This governing body selects a Chief Executive Officer who is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the cooperative.
CIPCO supplies all power requirements for its member cooperatives, and as their power provider, we are dedicated to delivering quality, safe, and reliable service at the lowest possible cost.
GENERATION & TRANSMISSION
At CIPCO, we have a responsibility to provide competitively priced electricity to our member owners. We believe energy policy must be based on a balanced, common-sense approach that ensures consistent, maintained, adequate levels of electric power supply and a reliable transmission system to move the power to the members' distribution points. In this pursuit, CIPCO maintains a portfolio of generation resources which emphasize ownership of production assets supplemented by market purchases.
As a state-of-the-art energy provider, we are meeting our members’ needs with a diverse fuel mix of coal, nuclear, hydro, wind, landfill gas generation, natural gas, and oil energy resources. We continue to invest in new technology and renewable energy production, supporting Iowa's development of renewable energy resources. Nearly 60 percent of our electricity is generated from emission and carbon-free resources minimizing the impact to our environment.
