CMU is owned by the residents of Chillicothe and supplies its customers with electricity, water, wastewater removal, and refuse collection. It is governed by a Board of Public Works, which is a nonpartisan group appointed by the mayor and city council. The primary goal of the Board is to provide the best service at the lowest possible cost.

Electric Department CMU has been supplying reliable electric service to the residents of Chillicothe since 1911. It presently serves approximately 4,700 electric customers with eight substations and 115 miles of line.

Water Department Chillicothe's water supply comes from four alluvial wells, which replaced the Grand River as a water source in the early 1970's. The water treatment plant has a capability of providing 6 million gallons per day and a firm output of 4.5 million gallons per day. CMU serves almost 4,000 water customers and has 90 miles of water line.

Wastewater Department Chillicothe's wastewater treatment plant is a 4.6 million-gallon-per-day oxidation ditch treatment facility. The system has 70 miles of sewer line and processes an average 1.4 million gallons per day.
