Aquion Energy

32 39th St, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States | Renewable Energy

Aquion Energy is the manufacturer of proprietary Aqueous Hybrid Ion (AHI™) batteries and battery systems for long duration stationary energy storage applications. AHI batteries are optimized for daily deep cycling for residential solar, green architecture, off-grid and microgrids, energy management, and grid-scale applications. Aquion’s high-performance, safe, sustainable and cost-effective batteries deliver industry-leading value for customers. Aquion’s battery systems provide flexible, modular energy storage that enables broad adoption of renewable energy technologies such as wind and solar, reduced reliance on fossil fuels, and optimization of existing grid-tied generation assets.

Aquion Energy manufactures batteries that are safe, reliable, sustainable, and cost-effective. Our Aspen batteries are based on our proprietary Aqueous Hybrid Ion (AHI™) chemistry which has a unique environmentally-friendly electrochemical design, and they are the first and only batteries in the world to be Cradle to Cradle Certified™. Aspen batteries contain no heavy metals or toxic chemicals and are non-flammable and non-explosive, making them the safest batteries in the world – designed for use in pristine environments, island locations, homes and businesses.

Our Origins

In 2007, with support from Carnegie Mellon University, Dr. Jay Whitacre began researching low-cost electrochemical approaches to bulk energy storage. Whitacre was looking for a way to create inexpensive and easy to manufacture batteries to meet the challenges of the world’s growing energy needs and increase the use of renewable power. In 2008 he produced the first functioning Aqueous Hybrid Ion (AHI) battery. The result was promising enough to attract the attention of VC firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, and by 2009, the technology was developed enough to spin out of Carnegie Mellon’s labs. The operations moved from Carnegie Mellon to the Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh, where Aquion is headquartered today.

Under the leadership of CEO Scott Pearson, Aquion began low volume production in the summer of 2011 and broke ground on full-scale manufacturing facility in nearby Mt. Pleasant, PA in 2012. Aquion has been shipping commercially since mid-2014.

Of all battery manufacturers, Aquion Energy is the only company that delivers batteries that combine safety, sustainability, performance, and affordability.

Why Aquion?

Because clean energy needs clean energy storage.

Let’s face it – energy generated from renewables, such as solar, should be paired with clean energy storage. At Aquion, we make the safest, cleanest energy storage in the world. Our batteries contain no heavy metals or toxic chemicals, are non-flammable and non-explosive, and are the first and only in the world to be Cradle to Cradle Certified™.

Aspen batteries are a perfect fit for the specific demands of solar energy storage applications, which include:

  • daily deep cycling
  • long-duration charging and discharging (4 to 20+ hour cycles)
  • sitting at partial states of charge

They’re also long-lasting and maintenance free, to boot!

Competing battery technologies have their drawbacks: lithium ion batteries can be dangerous and often come with a high price tag, and lead acid batteries can be unreliable, maintenance-heavy, and can leak hazardous chemicals.

Our Aspen batteries are different: they deliver clean energy storage that’s safe, sustainable, and cost-effective, so you can take pride in your battery bank, not just your solar array.
