AltaGas Ltd. (AltaGas), a Canadian corporation, is a North American diversified energy infrastructure business with a focus on owning and operating assets to provide clean and affordable energy to its customers. AltaGas' business strategy is underpinned by strong growth in natural gas supply and the growing demand for clean energy. More than 1,700 employees across North America are focused on executing AltaGas’ strategy through three business segments:
- Gas, which transacts more than 2 Bcf/d of natural gas and includes natural gas gathering and processing, natural gas liquids extraction and separation, transmission, storage, and natural gas marketing, as well as AltaGas' indirectly held one-third interest in Petrogas Energy Corp. (Petrogas). The Gas segment has significant prospects for growth in British Columbia and Alberta;
- Power, which includes generation assets located across North America with more than 1,600 MW of capacity from four fuel types, with significant opportunities to expand in California and across the United States, as well as the potential opportunity to develop new gas-fired and renewable generation in Alberta to replace coal;
- Utilities, serving over 560,000 customers through ownership of regulated natural gas distribution utilities across North America and a regulated natural gas storage utility in the United States, delivering clean and affordable natural gas to homes and businesses.
AltaGas is focused on maximizing the profitability of its assets; adding services that are complementary to its existing business segments; and growing through the acquisition and development of energy infrastructure, including infrastructure required to provide access to new markets and the potential for higher netbacks to producers in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin (WCSB).
With the physical and economic links along the energy value chain, from wellhead to burner tip; an experienced and talented workforce; and efficient, reliable and profitable assets, market knowledge and financial discipline, AltaGas has provided strong, stable and predictable returns to its investors.
HISTORY
On April 1, 1994, AltaGas Services Inc. began operations in Calgary with two services contracts and 21 employees who shared a vision of building a western Canadian midstream business. Today, more than 1,700 people are working to grow AltaGas Ltd. to be a leading North American energy infrastructure company.
In 1994, the Gas business segment took its first steps, supported by two short-term services contracts. Twenty two years later, the segment annually conducts transactions involving more than 700 billion cubic feet of gas.
The Utilities segment, which started with 53,000 customers in Alberta in 1998, now provides safe and reliable natural gas distribution service to more than 10 times that number in Canada and the United States.
The Power business segment commenced business in late 2001 and now operates 1,688 megawatts of clean generation in four fuel types. More energy production capacity is on the horizon.
AltaGas started with a small, but highly qualified, team, choosing to concentrate on market niches. An accumulated knowledge of the industry and a willingness to consider a broad range of assets has allowed AltaGas to make decisions quickly. Through changing environments, AltaGas has created ever-increasing levels of shareholder and social value. It has grown beyond its Alberta base, with business interests in six Canadian provinces and territories and five American states. AltaGas has become a trusted partner in the communities in which it operates by building relationships and making meaningful contributions to the quality of life in those communities.
The abundance of natural gas and growing demand for clean energy are providing future growth opportunities across all areas of AltaGas’ business. There are new opportunities to invest in natural gas processing capacity and to provide customers with access to new markets. AltaGas is positioned to build new infrastructure to support drilling activity in liquids-rich areas, to power communities with clean energy in North America, and to deliver clean and affordable energy to end users.
Vision
To be a leading North American diversified energy infrastructure company.
Strategy
To execute opportunities created by the abundance of natural gas and the increasing global demand for clean energy, by owning and operating a diversified mix of assets in gas, power and utilities.
More than 1,700 employees across North America are focused on executing AltaGas’ strategy through three business segments: Gas, Power, and Utilities.
In the Gas segment, AltaGas’ strategy is to provide a fully-integrated midstream service offering to its customers across the energy value chain. AltaGas is focused on developing and operating larger gas infrastructure projects, as well as building and acquiring gathering and processing infrastructure on behalf of, or from, producers seeking to redeploy capital to exploration and production activities rather than to non-core activities such as gas processing. By establishing a western energy hub in northeast British Columbia; through its ownership interest in Petrogas and the Ferndale Terminal; and through the proposed Ridley Island Propane Export Terminal currently under development, AltaGas is uniquely positioned to move natural gas and natural gas liquids (NGL or NGLs) to key markets, including Asia, and to potentially deliver higher netbacks to producers for natural gas liquids.
AltaGas’ Power segment is focused on meeting North America’s demand for clean energy by building, owning, and operating a diversified portfolio of clean energy assets. There is a particular focus on natural gas-fired power generation, which is expected to provide critical load balancing across North America, as significant nuclear and coal-fired power generation is expected to be decommissioned over the next decade and be replaced by renewable power and natural gas-fired power generation. AltaGas is positioned to take advantage of this opportunity.
In the Utilities segment, AltaGas is focused on finding innovative ways to continue to safely and reliably deliver clean and affordable natural gas to more customers. AltaGas focuses on growing rate base through adding customers, including serving power plants within service jurisdictions, and improving and upgrading existing infrastructure to meet increased residential and commercial demand. AltaGas also seeks to execute strategic utility acquisitions and dispositions when opportunities arise.
STRONG COMMITMENT TO SOCIAL VALUE
AltaGas operates in a safe, reliable manner in close partnership with First Nations and communities. AltaGas has three guiding principles for developing energy infrastructure: Respect the land, share the benefits, and nurture long-term relationships.
Safety and Environmental Stewardship are core values at AltaGas and integral to how we operate. The safety of our employees, contractors, and anyone impacted by our operations in addition to protecting the environment and minimizing our impact are critical to AltaGas maintaining a sustainable business that provides for our stakeholders today and well into the future.
