Our History
The American Dream
To understand the true definition of “The American Dream”, one doesn’t have to look further then the origins of Safran Metals. Founded in 1939 by Paul Safran, an immigrant from Nazi Germany, the company has become a Chicago institution.
Before fleeing for a better life with little other then the clothes on his back and a limited understanding of the English language, Paul had acquired a knowledge of metal through various apprenticeships and jobs, even starting a metal company in Germany before the Nazi rise to power. Forced to leave his homeland and make a fresh start in the United States, Paul decided to create Safran Metals when he realized that it may be easier to actually start a new company than finding employment in another. With the help of his wife Adda, Paul started Safran Metals in his small two-bedroom apartment, eventually growing the company into the industry leader that it is today.
Safran Metals specializes in the purchase of non-ferrous metals. We rely on the NYMEX for current pricing, and adjust values continuously so that our customers receive the best possible price.
When you sell to us we receive, sort, grade and process the material.
At Safran Metals, we rely heavily on our customers in supplying us with quality non-ferrous metal. Most of our customers have been with us for many years, and can attest to the time and quality control that we use in processing any metal that comes through our warehouse.
Safran Metals has accurate scales that are consistantly calibrated and in-line with city inspection standards.
We offer pickup service in and around the Chicago land area.
We accept delivery on all 4 of our loading docks, spanning 2 warehouses
We offer flexible terms to meet the customers needs and ensure their satisfaction.
Environment
We are committed to the environment.
- Approximately 43% of all copper used each year is a product of recycling and businesses like Safran Metals.
- Due to the high value of recycled copper (95% of the value of primary metal from newly mined ore) recycling reduces the need for new, potentially environmentally harmful, mining operations.
- Copper is a natural trace element that is essential in the development of most animals, plants, and even human beings, and is not known to cause any health problems when used in moderation.
- Each year in the U.S.A., nearly as much copper is recovered from recycled material as is derived from newly mined ore. Excluding wire production, most of which uses newly refined copper, more than three-fourths of the amount used by copper and brass mills, ingot makers, foundries, powder plants and other industries comes from recycled scrap.
