We support many local civic organizations, including groups such as Keep East Point Beautiful, and Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful. Many of our dedicated employees work within the community in various ways
As well as being noted one of Atlanta’s 50 Fastest-Growing Private Companies and Women in Business Top 10, Newell has become one of East Point's largest employers. Our CEO, Sharon Newell Shirley, attributes this to running the business based on an open-door philosophy and adherence to Christian principles.
FERROUS
Steel is the most widely recycled metal in the world. Each year, tons and tons of steel scrap are consumed by steel mills and foundries. This metal is smelted and then sold to manufacturersas raw material for new manufactured goods.
For the past three decades, Newell Recycling has been a major supplier to the steel industry.
NON FERROUS
Newell Recycling can process and recycle most types of nonferrous metal. A large portion of our nonferrous operation involves aluminum can recycling. Our aluminum can operation handles more than 30,000 pounds of cans per day. Empty aluminum cans are magnetically sorted, inspected, and compressed into 1,000 pound bales for shipment to an aluminum smelter.
A VISION TURNED REALITY The history of Newell Recycling
Alton S. Newell had a vision to solve the difficult problem of dismantling junk cars into pieces small enough to bale for scrap. A one-time junkyard manager, Mr. Newell learned how to scrap cars by hand at a rate of (10 hours a car). In the early 1960s Mr. Newell developed an efficient metal processing machine known to the world today as the Newell Shredder.
Mr. Newell did not receive formal training as an engineer, but was able to pioneer a machine with capabilities to process an automobile in about 10 minutes and used less energy than other shredding and crushing machines. The original model was powered by a 500 horsepower motor, processing 30 to 40 cars a day. His invention was patented in 1969.
