EES and Southern Company will be presenting a paper on ClearChem SO2 mitigation technology at the upcoming EUEC Conference in Phoenix, AZ, February of 2014. For many coal-fired boilers without a wet scrubber, reducing acid gas emissions is a key compliance concern.  The existing strategies center around sodium- or calcium-based neutralization of the acid gas, with various formulations and injection locations.  Recently, ClearChem micronized limestone slurry was tested at Southern Company Plant Smith.  Initial experiments indicated the best-case slurry concentration, and tests were done at this concentration for low-load, mid-load, and full-load conditions, while varying the stoichiometry.  The possibility of achieving maximum removal was also explored using ClearChem injection combined with injection of hydrated lime into the flue gas.   This paper will focus on the importance of CFD boiler modeling and subsequent validation of the model to achieve maximum performance in the field.
