Background:

The Toxco Material Management Center (TMMC) located at 109 Flint Rd. Oak Ridge TN 37830, is a licensed and permitted nuclear material processing facility specializing in ways to reuse and recycle materials and equipment giving the material and equipment additional life as opposed to burial as waste.  Toxco’s concept is also to provide services to remediation operators that appropriately characterize waste materials that allow for minimization of quantities that must go to the most expensive waste disposal options.

The TMMC facility consists of approximately 16 acres with over 120,000 square feet of building space.  The entire site is operated under a Radioactive Materials License with the State of Tennessee.

Forward:

The TMMC is not a long term waste storage facility.  All materials received at TMMC will be handled appropriately and removed from the facility in a timely manner.  Generally, the radioactive materials that will be handled at TMMC have low levels of contamination and present no danger to the public.  The development of TMMC’s business, products, and services will evolve over time based upon customer needs. TMMC is committed to handling specific and unique needs of the generators.

Toxco brings the following services to the TMMC:

  • Sorting and segregating – TMMC provides the service of waste remediation and characterization to determine appropriate dispositioning paths.  Sorting materials and segregating materials to minimize the amount of waste that must be handled by the most costly option.
  • Bulk Survey For Release Program.  This allows surveys and material characterization to be conducted of bulk materials that may be disposed of at a restricted landfill in lieu of a radioactive material landfill.  This option saves the remediation contractor large sums of money and saves expensive landfill space.    These materials are received, surveyed and shipped out in a timely manner.
  • Manufacture of a line of lead shielded containers to be used by others in the nuclear industry to safely store and transport radioactive waste.  This involves the recycle and reuse of lead materials previously used in the nuclear industry and avoids the landfill burial of the lead which is the current established practice.  These containers are certified shipping and on site storage containers.  Utilizing these containers, in most all cases, removes the need to remotely handle waste at anyone’s facility
  • Refurbishment and rental of equipment used in the nuclear industry.  An example of this is shipping containers with fixed contamination.  Refurbishment of these items avoids premature burial and extends the life of the equipment.  Many pieces of equipment that has been previously used in the nuclear industry has the ability to be rehabilitated instead of setting idle awaiting burial or another dispositioning path.
  • Supercompaction of waste material - Waste volume reduction

Toxco is pre-qualified to perform work for federal agencies under a Basic Ordering Agreement (BOA) with the United States Department of Energy (DOE) including work on DOE sensitive material.  Any federal agency can develop a work package to be provided to companies pre-qualified under this BOA.  TMMC has processed tens of millions of pounds of material saving the customer tens of millions of dollars. To utilize this contract vehicle, one should contact the Oak Ridge Operations Office of the Department of Energy (865-574-1000) Procurement Division and Reference contract number DE-SC0004756.
