Hydro Recovery-Antrim LP

Old Route 15 and 10 Boone Run Road, Blossburg Borough Tioga County, Pennsylvania, United States | Waste recycling

Company Info

Hydro Recovery LP (Hydro) is a manufacturer of Hydraulic Stimulation Fluid (HSF™). The process will utilize high total dissolved solids fluids (HTDSF) which are classified as a residual waste and process it into a reusable HSF™ product. HTDSF is generated during the natural gas exploration and production activities and is commonly referred to as drilling fluids, 'frac water,' 'flowback water,' or 'production water.'  The company can also offer Marcellus Shale wastewater disposal.

Hydro Recovery plans on building multiple regional plants that will be strategically located along main routes where natural gas is being drilled in the Marcellus Shale formation in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. The goal is to minimize transportation to within 30 miles of well sites, increase convenience for customers, reduce trucking expenses, and reduce truck traffic in local communities – all while being more environmentally friendly. Natural gas companies can choose to install their own pipelines which could run from their own gas wells or centralized impoundments directly to Hydro Recovery in order to eliminate or greatly reduce the need for trucking.

Hydro began construction of its first plant located at the I-99 exit for Blossburg Borough, Tioga County, in October 2010 and has achieved commercial operations in June of 2011. At full capacity plants are designed to receive approximately 330,000 gallons or 7,857 barrels of HTDSF per day producing approximately 360,000 gallons or 8,571 barrels of HSF™ per day and employing 16-20 new full time skilled jobs, while adding significant additional benefits to the local real estate and payroll tax bases.

The picture on the left shows a rendition of how the plant was originally designed.  Due to Hydro's success and its ability to adapt and grow with the natural gas industry, the picture on the right shows the planned expansion for the Blossburg location which will include increased storage capacity and a crystallizer.

Our Process

Hydro Recovery LP is a manufacturer of Hydraulic Stimulation Fluid (HSF™). The process utilizes high total dissolved solids fluids (HTDSF) from the exploration of natural gas and turns it into a beneficial use.

How it works

Hydro Recovery takes for free on board (FOB) HTDSF otherwise known as drilling fluids, “frac water,” “flowback water,” “production water,” and other liquid waste such as top-hole water, tank cleanings, frac sand, etc. from natural gas companies drilling in the Marcellus Shale Formation who purchase our product. The frac water is used as a raw material in the manufacturing of our product – Hydraulic Stimulation Fluid.

Hydro Recovery has developed new economical technology, with NO SURFACE DISCHARGE, that will process the HTDSF or frac water into a product useable in the hydraulic fracturing process; thereby reducing the need for disposal of high total dissolved solids (TDS) water into the Commonwealth’s waterways and greatly reducing the number of gallons of fresh water to be withdrawn for natural gas drilling. The Hydro Recovery process removes suspended solids and other contaminates. The resulting HSF™ saves chemical additives in the fracking process, provides maximum protection of the gas reservoir and prevents scaling. When compared to blending and recycling flowback, HSF™ protects the gas reservoir by:

Hardness reduced
Iron and other metals
Reduces hydro fracturing chemical use
Optimized pH for friction reduction
Total Suspended Solids (TSS) reduced
HSF™ is 'not considered a waste' by the PA Department of Environmental Protection once it arrives at a well site and is beneficially used by pumping it down the well hole. It will be considered a product for PA regulatory purposes. At full plant capacity, one of Hydro's facilities could save 105 million gallons of precious fresh water from withdrawal annually and can save 142 million pounds of TDS discharge into our streams. 100% of all water coming into the plant either as frac water or to process the HSF™ will be sold as a product to natural gas companies. The resulting solid waste filter cake will be taken to a permitted landfill. The following chart is an example of chemical composition of the resulting HSF™ product; however, since our product is customizable we may be able to adjust the design quality to meet your specific design parameter needs:
