Maztech, Inc, was founded by Dr. Michael Zumbrum in October of 2001 to develop and manufacture unique fluid handling products. After receiving his Ph.D. from Virginia Techin 1990, Dr. Zumbrum worked in technology development at General Electric Silicones and W.L. Gore and Associates, Inc.

The first product developed by Maztech Inc. was Smart Shield Tubing, to address the need for high purity, chemical resistant peristaltic pump tubing. SmartShield™ tubing provides a pure PTFE bore for product contact and a resilient Santoprene™ elastomer cover for unsurpassed durability. SmartShield™ tubing complies with FDA guidelines (21CFR177), and has passed USP Class VI, cytotoxicity, and physicochemical testing at an independent laboratory.

Dr. Zumbrum also provides consulting services in polymer characterization. In particular, he is an expert in understanding structure-property-process interrelationships in silicone elastomers. He has assisted many clients in obtaining custom formulations and helped in characterizing the performance of silicones in numerous bioprocess applications.

Dr. Zumbrum has been an active member of the Bioprocess Equipment Standard (BPE) committee on Polymers and Hygienic Seals since 2001. Some of his contributions to the committee have included recommendations on material biocompatibility and fitness for use in hygienic applications.

Consulting

Dr. Zumbrum provides independent consulting services in the area of polymer characterization. He often facilitates work with independent laboratories to obtain characterization data requested by his clients.

He has written many technical reports for clients in the bioprocess industry to characterize hose life and leacheables in bio-process fluids. He has authored reports on silicone elastomers, thermoplastic elastomers, and thermoset elastomers.

Dr. Zumbrum has also worked with clients to develop proprietary elastomer formulations. He has worked with every major silicone supplier in the world to obtain the necessary products for his clients.

Consulting is available on an hourly basis as well as a project basis.
