Solix BioSystems, Inc. was founded in 2006 with a vision of realizing the full commercial potential of photosynthetic microalgae.  Headquartered in Fort Collins, Colorado, Solix BioSystems has developed and successfully deployed a robust algal growth system (AGS®) that is based on its proprietary extended-surface area closed photobioreactor panels.  The technology is applicable to a broad range of microalgae species.  The Company has operated its demonstration facility in southwestern Colorado for multiple years, confirming the technology’s reliability, industry leading volumetric productivity and scalability.  Coupled with an experienced leadership team, and committed international investors and board of directors, the Company is now poised to exploit its technology in the development and production of multiple high-value specialty algal products for the nutrition, personal care and aquaculture markets.

Technology

The core of Solix’s intellectual property consists of its proprietary AGS technology, a scaleable, cost-effective, and proven system for the production of algal biomass.  AGS is an extended surface area culture system that incorporates Solix’s proprietary Lumian™ photobioreactor panels.  The system consists of vertical panels suspended in a water basin.  The vertical orientation of Lumian panels increases the surface area illuminated by both direct and diffuse light while the water basin provides structural support and improved temperature control to optimize algal growth.  Results from Solix’s successful deployment of AGS at its Coyote Gulch demonstration facility demonstrated that AGS can deliver:

  • Higher productivity
  • Superior crop protection
  • Improved process control
  • More rapid scale-up
  • Applicable to a broad range of microalgae

Nutrition

Algae are an excellent source of many essential nutrients, ranging from proteins, essential fatty-acids, and antioxidants.  Solix’s AGS technology is being applied to optimize the cultivation of selected algae to produce a range of high-value ingredients for human nutritional supplements, functional foods and beverages, and aquaculture.

Renewable Chemicals and Fuels

Many algae are prolific producers of lipids, proteins, and polysaccharides.  Algal lipids produced using AGS at Solix’s Coyote Gulch demonstration facility have successfully been converted into biodiesel, green diesel, jet fuel, and bioplastics.  Solix is continuing to optimize its AGS technology to improve the economics of using algae to produce feedstocks for the renewable chemical and fuel markets.
