Soil Services

Soil sampling for septic system design - Health inspectors and engineers need soil characteristics and soil loading rates to design suitable on-site septic systems.

Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) – The purpose of a Phase I ESA is to identify recognized environmental conditions (RECs) within the scope of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). RECs are defined as the presence or likely presence of any hazardous substances or petroleum products on a property under conditions that indicate an existing release, a past release, or a material threat of a release of any hazardous substances or petroleum products into structures on the property or into the ground, ground water, or surface water of the property. A Phase I ESA is conducted according to guidelines provided by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) E1527-05 “Standard Practice for ESAs: Phase I ESA Process” and 40 CFR part 312 “Innocent Landowners, Standards for Conducting All Appropriate Inquiries”.

Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) – If a site is considered contaminated according to the Phase I ESA, a Phase II ESA is conducted to investigate the quantity of contamination. Investigation usually involves collecting and analyzing samples of soil, groundwater and/or building materials. A Phase II ESA is conducted according to guidelines provided by ASTM E1903-97(2002) “Standard Guide for ESAs: Phase II ESA Process”.
