On Sunday July 5th, heavy smoke over the area came from fires in Canada, in interior British Columbia and on Vancouver Island. Although the smoke looked thick and worrisome to residents and visitors throughout the Olympic Peninsula, there was NO danger of imminent fire to residents here. The City of Port Angeles is pleased to announce the League of American Bicyclists recently awarded our City, along with Clallam County and the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe, the coveted Bicycle Friendly Community designation. With this award, we join a select group of 350 communities across all 50 states that welcome bicyclists by providing safe accommodations for bicycling, and encouraging people to bike for transportation and recreation. This is a tremendous accomplishment by the community and reflects the decades of investment in pathways and infrastructure, safety and education initiatives, and encouragement of various bicycling activities in support of residents and visitors alike.City Council will highlight this designation at its July 7th Council meeting, held at 6 p.m. in the City Council Chambers. The City of Port Angeles is teaming with Washington State Dept. of Natural Resources (DNR) Urban and Community Forestry Program on an Urban Forestry Restoration Project to remove Scotch Broom, English ivy, and Himalayan blackberry. This upgrade prohibits all outdoor burning which includes recreational fires within the City of Port Angeles (propane/gas appliances are allowed).
