Casella Waste Systems, Inc

25 Greens Hill Lane , Rutland, Vermont, United States | Energy

Casella Waste Systems was founded in 1975 as a single truck operation in Rutland, Vermont. Our existing footprint stems from a combination of organic growth and strategic acquisitions.

Until the late 1990’s, our growth was focused in the northeast United States with a mission to address our region’s waste management challenges intelligently, through an integrated solid waste platform, including waste collection, transfer, disposal, and recycling processing.

In late 1999, Casella acquired KTI, an integrated provider of waste processing services, and our footprint was extended to cover much of the eastern United States. The KTI acquisition greatly expanded our expertise and assets in material processing.

In 2002, we recognized that additional in-market disposal capacity was required to meet a large, unmet need in the northeast. To develop capacity, we sought to differentiate ourselves in the solid waste market by linking recycling and other leading-edge resource transformation solutions to the solid waste disposal needs of municipalities.

Our SEED™ (Sustainable Environmental and Economic Development) program was conceived of and implemented as a framework to develop disposal capacity in a responsible manner in which the interests of all stakeholders are aligned. With the implementation of our SEED™ program, we have built sustainable infrastructure around our disposal projects that adds economic and environmental value beyond the traditional landfill model.

The concept of sustainability is not new to Casella. For over thirty years the foundation of our business has been built on managing and conserving environmental resources for our customers and communities in a viable economic model. In 1977, we built and opened the first recycling center in Vermont, an early implementation of an environmentally and socially sustainable component to our overall business model.

Today, we are leading the solid waste industry with an innovative business strategy that seeks to create sustainable value beyond the traditional disposal model. We view waste as a resource for producing renewable energy and a raw material for manufacturing new products.

Casella established the first Zero-Sort Recycling facilities in the states of Massachusetts, New York and Vermont and today renews over 300,000 tons of recyclables each year. Zero-Sort Recycling, Casella's trademarked single-stream recycling system, helps customers and communities reduce costs and ease participation by placing all recyclable materials into a single bin. Casella then sorts the materials in state-of-the-art processing facilities and prepares them to be remarketed.

CNG Truck Fleet

In 2010, Casella purchased its first CNG (compressed natural gas) refuse truck. The truck was initially fueled at the City of Burlington Public Work’s CNG fueling station while the company built its own station at a nearby facility. Today, Casella owns over three dozen CNG trucks and to-date has displaced over 400,000 gallons of diesel fuel. Casella also owns and operates 4 CNG filling stations.

First On-Farm Anaerobic Digester in Massachusetts

Casella Organics operates the first farm-based anaerobic digester in the state of Massachusetts that co-digests manure and source separated organics. Anaerobic digestion produces renewable energy and fertilizer – recovering both power and valuable nutrients from the 'recycled' residuals. In the spring of 2014, we will be operating a second farm-based digester, also in Massachusetts. We provide full service collection, transportation and digestion of food scraps and residues throughout the Northeast.

Casella Organics

Casella Organics™ provides world-class removal, transportation, recycling, processing, and marketing of organic resources – including short paper fiber, ash, wood wastes, food wastes, biosolids, and compost. The company operates composting, renewable energy and manufacturing facilities. For nearly 30 years, Casella Organics has helped clients build, manage, and maintain sustainable and effective waste solutions.

The Power of Three

The Power of Three™ is our innovative solution for providing genuine closed-loop recycling. Provided in partnership with Foley Distributing and SCA Paper, it is a three-step process of picking up a customer’s recyclables, processing them into new products, and then providing renewed materials back to the customer in the form of new paper products.

Landfill Gas to Energy

The majority of our landfills convert landfill gas into energy by burning methane that produces electricity to be placed on the grid. Today we produce enough electricity to power over 30,000 homes annually.
