Energy-savings and water quality improvement opportunities with SolarBee and GridBee mixers: In wastewater treatment, the aeration system is often the largest energy consumer. In the past, the answer for every problem seemed to be to increase horsepower and add more aeration. When you analyze aeration, typically only 20% to 50% of the energy consumed is needed for production of dissolved oxygen (DO), for the biological oxygen demand (BOD) and nitrification bacteria. The remaining energy is used for the mixing effect, to get the DO to the bacteria that need it. 

Each GridBee or SolarBee mixer can typically displace up to 30-50 horsepower of surface aerator mixing (run-time). With the SB or GF performing the mixing, the aeration system can be dialed back to just provide the needed DO. In most energy saving projects our equipment has a one- to three-year payback. With electric rates near $0.10 per kWh, savings can approach $750,000 per mixer over 25 years. 

Many types of industrial water reservoirs have been improved by our GridBee and SolarBee long-distance mixers. 

Traditionally the water industry has relied heavily on the energy and chemical industries - an estimated 7% of world energy consumption and 3% of North American energy consumption is used to clean up and/or process wastewater, drinking water, lake water, and stormwater. Large volumes of chemicals, many with potentially serious long-term toxicity problems, are put into lakes and other reservoirs regularly in attempts to improve water quality.

• Distribute an oxidizer to provide an odor cap for anaerobic ponds
• De-gas sulfides continuously to eliminate odor in large deep ponds
• Distribute flocculation chemicals evenly in large reservoirs to settle heavy metals
• Reduce aeration and mixing energy in aerated ponds

The natural curved intake bell-to volute-to discharge design of EEE aerators promotes the highest gallon per minute rating of any aerator on the market. The less efficient design of other aerators actually retards water flow and efficient oxygenation.

The EEE diffuser is not only 150% to 400% heavier but also larger in diameter to eliminate spray-back that could freeze up and corrode the motor as in the case of most aerators. All EEE aerators have large diffusers – the result of extensive engineering research – and these diffusers offer a number of important advantages: 

• The large EEE diffuser provides more surface for the in rushing water to follow
• The spray is less susceptible to wind drift
• The heavy-duty construction of stainless steel and fiberglass reinforced resin makes it 150% to 400% heavier than diffusers found on competitive aerators.
• The weight of the EEE diffuser minimizes vibration such that it balances out below 0.20 mils vibration peak to peak, a rating significantly better than the 2.0 mils level considered acceptable throughout the aerator industry.
