Energy Storage
Energy Storage for Microgrids
Combining electrical energy storage, such as a lithium-ion battery system with a solar array, provides the ability to separate from the electrical grid and operate an independent microgrid in a completely secure and reliable manner

Such a system has the added advantage of matching generation to the time of use and enables peak-shaving applications. Battery-based energy storage is more environmentally-friendly than traditional diesel generators and significantly reduces the fuel and sizing needs for common backup generators. Even small amounts of energy storage can have a major impact on reducing fuel costs, maintenance and omissions of diesel or bio-diesel generators.

Princeton Power Systems can incorporate many types of storage, including hybrid lead-acid, lithium-ion, flow batteries and flywheels. While lead-acid batteries are still the lowest-cost solution for backup power, newer lithium-ion batteries provide high efficiency (>90% round trip), 10 year lifetimes and deep-cycle capability —thus providing a better long-term ROI and cost efficiency. Additionally, they require less than one-third the volume.

Energy Storage for Grid Support and Renewables Integration

America’s electrical transmission and distribution system is aging and unable to support the ever-growing need for electricity. Many of the resulting issues can be mitigated by adding energy storage close to where the power is needed, whether at the substation level or behind the customer’s meter.
Grid support services are critical to enabling further penetration of intermittent resources, such as solar and wind, mitigation their wide swings in power output, such as cloud coverage. Integrating renewable energy with storage can be valuable to prove the cost-effectiveness of these generation technologies. Area Frequency Regulation (AFR) and other ancillary services for grid support are increasingly lucrative markets. Additionally, the benefits of using integrated energy storage systems — one of our core competencies — are becoming more widely known.

Princeton Power Systems designs and operators energy storage systems (ESS) that combine batteries, our grid-tied inverters (GTIB) and a communication system that interfaces with the electrical grid. The communication system works in real time and is programmable to run in a variety of grid support modes.

EV Charging

Following the successful rollout of the first mainstream electric vehicles (EV) in early 2011, a myriad of new makes and models have been introduced in the marketplace. From BMW and Volkswagen to Toyota and Hyundai, car manufacturers catering to consumers of all income ranges are joining the EV movement. Consumer interest is fueled by the high gas prices and the ever-growing green movement.

Municipalities and businesses around the country are working hard to create an elaborate EV charging infrastructure, starting with all major U.S. cities. However, grid outage can cause severe problems for drivers of EVs. Princeton Power Systems provides the solution through its line of state-if-the-art inverters.

Princeton Power Systems batteries and inverters are completely compatible with the various brands, models and charging standards used in today’s marketplace.

Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Car Charging — The American Standard
AC Level 1: 120 V, 12 A (1.4 kW) or 120 V, 16 A (1.9 kW)
AC Level 2: 240 V, up to 80 A (19.2 kW)

DC Level 1: 200 – 450 Vdc, up to 36 kW (80 A)
DC Level 2: 200 – 450 Vdc, up to 90 kW (200 A)

CHAdeMO Car Charging — The Japanese Standard
Up to 120 A (50 kW) of DC power

Princeton Power Systems Product Interface for AC Charging
Princeton Power Systems inverters can take over powering AC car chargers in case of grid outages. AC chargers are typically wired to the load panel (rather than directly to the inverter). Subsequently, any Princeton Power Systems inverter can be wired to this load panel with the GTIB platform ensuring continuation of charging capability when the grid goes down using battery power. With the DRI platform, the inverter can manage photovoltaic (PV) and battery power to charge cars.

Princeton Power Systems Product Interface for DC Charging — The Kiosk Solution
The Princeton Power Systems hose can be relocated to an external kiosk or it can be placed on the side of the inverter. The optimal solutions, however, is for the controls and charging hose to be located in an external kiosk, separate from the inverter.

Our kiosk solution provides an easy-to-use touch panel for user control, has bidirectional charging and discharging capabilities and is interfaced through industry standard OCPP communications interface.
