Landfill diversion

EU waste policy aims to ensure that by 2020 waste is managed as a resource; waste generated per capita is in absolute decline; re-use and recycling of waste are economically attractive options for public and private actors; more materials are recycled according to high quality standards; energy recovery is limited to non-recyclable materials; landfilling is virtually eliminated.

Landfill tax is seen as a key mechanism in enabling the UK to meet its targets set out in the Landfill Directive for the landfilling of biodegradable and combustable waste. Through increasing the cost of landfill, reuse and advanced recycling technologies as well as energy from waste technologies with higher gate fees are made to become more financially attractive.

The Greenway Group has been a pioneer in reuse, recycling and Energy from Waste. Energy from Waste (EfW) is the process of generating energy in the form of electricity and/or heat from the incineration of waste.

Export of fuel to state of the art Energy from Waste plants

The Greenway Waste Recycling arm has been one of the first UK based companies to get involved into the cross-border EfW market. In 2010 the first Trans Frontier Shipment of combustable waste was recovered at the Waste Fired Power Plant of the City of Amsterdam in The Netherlands.

The Waste Fired Power Plant (WFPP) is a state of the art plant in producing energy and products from waste. The generated electricity is fed into the grid and supplies households and industries all over the country. Nearly 99% of the 1.4 million tonnes of processed waste every year is recycled. This makes it the largest single-location waste processor in the world.

This innovative plant has set a new global standard for electrical efficiency at over 30%. And is classed as a recovery operation under R1 - Use as fuel, according to the Waste Frame Directive energy recovery formula.

Currently over 120.000 tons per annum are shipped cross border by Greenway Waste Recycling to be recovered at several European EfW plants. And we are upping those tonnages as well as the number of R1 EfW plants.
