COMPANY OVERVIEW

Metaux Depot officially opened in November 1998 as a joint venture between AIM and W.I. Sandys; each one having been a major player in the Scrap Recycling industry for many years. Both firms brought with them their own set of skills and expertise: one being an international metals trader and refiner, with plants in Canada, U.S.A. and Mexico, and offices worldwide; and the other being a leader in retail metal management. The synergy of the two firms proved to be an extremely successful formula, and in the course of a few years, AIM has continued it’s plan of international expansion, while Metaux Depot has established itself among the leaders in the recycling industry in Montreal, serving 75,000 customers annually in a modern, state of the art facility, constantly upgrading and innovating to better serve their customers.

At Metaux Depot, we have always strived to get our customers in and out in as short a time as possible, although, to be honest, some customers hang around and chat with the staff, check their “Depot- Points” card to see what they can redeem, have a complimentary cup of coffee or have a hot dog or two at the hot dog tent, also available free of charge all summer.

Most of the regulars know us by name, and we know most of them by name also.

The Steel Yard is staffed by three of the best. Alain, Martin, and Sam will unload and sort your steel loads in no time at all. Of course, working in a completely paved yard helps keep up morale. No more unloading in ankle high mud, the yard is easy to keep clean in summer and winter. Alain is the veteran, having been here from day one. Martin, his son, joined a few years later, and Sam became the third member of the trio, constantly keeping the yard clean in the loader. Rumor is, if you bring Alain a coffee, he will be your friend for life. And…you can get the coffee free of charge right here.

The warehouse is led by two guys who have a combined experience of over 40 years in this industry. Luc and Eric use that experience to advise and instruct about grading non ferrous material to get our customers in and out in record time. If you have any questions regarding quality and grading, they are the guys to ask. Backing them is a group of great boys in the warehouse, some that have been with us for 30 years, and some for a few months. All of them are ready to make your experience here uncomplicated and easy.

Our Office is three person collaboration. Louis, the veteran of the group, is there to weigh your trucks and advise about steel quality and Steelyard procedures. He will be the first person you see when selling steel. Carmen is the office problem solver and knows almost every customer by name. Aside from taking care of all our office needs, she supplies lollipops to the children, smiles and has kind words for everyone. If you ask nicely, she may give you a lollipop also. Brigitte is the newest addition to the team. You will know her by her greeting. She calls everybody “Young Man” You will always feel young at Metaux Depot, no matter what your age.

And then there is the old man you will see walking around, almost aimlessly, always with a coffee in hand. He may be in the office, looking over Carmen’s shoulder, or in the warehouse, trying to help out at the scale, or in the steel yard (rarely when it’s cold). That would be me, Richard. I’ve been doing this for almost 40 years, so I have to say, I have almost got the hang of it now. Still, I learn something new almost everyday, and I still love to come to work.
