20204-110 Avenue NW, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada | Compost & Food Waste

AltRoot is an Alberta-based waste management company that specializes in the handling of organic waste streams from municipal sources to produce organic compost and nutrient dense soil. Our facility north of Edmonton is licensed to receive 20,000 tonnes of organic waste each year from surrounding towns and rural municipalities. We use covered aerated static pile (CASP) techniques and technologies which provide rapid biodegradation. CASP effectively provides the required environmental controls for air and odor emissions and for water quality concerns. With controlled high temperatures, we are able to process year-round and turn organic waste into nutrient rich compost in as little as four to six weeks.

Our compost is primarily used by farmers to effectively and efficiently provide nutrient dense fertilizer on their fields for the purpose of elevating soil health.

Removing organic waste from the regular municipal solid waste stream reduces the production of greenhouse gases.

When organic waste breaks down without the help of oxygen and UV sunlight rays, such as in a landfill, it produces methane. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas and methane from landfills accounts for approximately 11 per cent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Composting with CASP eliminates these emissions. In the process of doing our work we also sequester carbon back into the soil, creating carbon offsets and helping to bring balance to the planet.
