“The other day we demolished a swing set and a garage, and we also took away sofas and file cabinets,” says Mike Liberato, who owns and runs the business along with his son and partner, Matthew.

TopNotch also demos bathrooms, kitchens, sheds and more and will remove carpets, fences, yard waste, appliances and just about anything else you don’t want cluttering up your space. Usual turnaround for jobs is fast - for example, if someone needs a bathroom ripped out, Mike will come by, look over the job, and give a quote. Work usually begins the following week. ​
​“Our goal is to not make people wait too long and to take care of our customers,” he says. “Two of our guys are going out tomorrow to demo a bathroom, and it will be done in one day. When they leave, it will be neat and clean, so when the contractor comes in, they can get right to it. We do a nice job. And if someone is not happy with something, we go back and fix it.”

For removal services, quotes can usually be given over the phone once he has an idea of how much of his dump trailer will be filled, since he dumps based on weight and size. “We also rent out our dump trailers, which I drop off,” says Mike. “What’s nice is instead of having a container in your driveway, this has wheels on it, so homeowners can load it up and then when they’re done, we come and drive it away.” Rental times may vary from one day to seven or more.

The people he sends out to do the work are all known to him, or to his son, who is a police officer in Florham Park. “I’ve been a schoolteacher for the last 25 years [21 in Chatham] and many of the guys who work for me used to wrestle for me, since I was also a wrestling coach,” he says. “Others are friends of my son. Their work ethic is second to none. They are just phenomenal.”

Mike’s brother, John, has been a teacher for 35 years and was the head football coach for Summit High School. “When people hear our last name, they recognize it and know they can trust us,” he says.

“I’ve been doing demos most of my life, and I also have another business, TopNotch Sealcoating,” says Mike. “I’ve been doing that for 30 years.”
Service areas for both businesses include all the towns surrounding Chatham, of course, but TopNotch also goes to Warren, Caldwell, Roseland and other towns. How far they go depends on the size of the job as well.
