History of Hy & Carl's Waste

Otto Drechsel and his family left Germany and traveled to the United States in the early 1900s for a better chance at life. The family raised hogs, and to help supplement feed, they picked up leftover scraps from restaurants to feed their pigs. The food was stored in barrels and the barrels were loaded onto a wagon, which was pulled by a team of horses back to the farm.

The horses hauled the garbage to the Otto family’s privately owned landfill. This was the beginning of their garbage business. We pride ourselves on customer service. We aren't trying to be the biggest, just the best. When it's time to take out the trash, give us a call!

Oldest Family-Run Business in Salt Lake City

Eventually, the garbage was hauled by Model T and Model A flatbed trucks, beginning around the year 1917. The company continued to use the flatbed trucks until the middle of the 1940s.

The Otto family purchased their first rear-loading garbage packer in the 1950s. The first roll-off was not introduced to the company until the 1970s, shortly after they were introduced to front-loading trucks. The company has been passed down many generations and is currently owned by the 4th generation. Hy & Carl’s Waste is the oldest family-run garbage business in Salt Lake Valley.
