Wiggeby Agriculture AB

Wiggeby Gårds Väg 21 , Sockarby, Stockholms, Sweden | Waste Management

The farm Wiggeby is located on Färingsö, about three miles from Stockholm city, one of the many islands in Mälaren.

Today the farm is owned by Håkan and Teri Lee Eriksson. The Eriksson family bought the farm from Robert Ljunglöv in 1925, known to many as snuff manufacturer Ljunglöv. At the time of the takeover in 1925, Wiggeby included approx. 60 ha of which 26 ha were arable, today after the purchase of land and through lease a total of approx. 1000 ha is cultivated.

The farm is located within a water protection area and in its vicinity there is extensive permanent housing. This makes it necessary to place great emphasis on the planning and implementation of various maintenance measures, e.g. when spreading stable manure, commercial manure and using chemical pesticides. Large parts of the area border natural land and the farm is located in an area with great cultural and environmental values.

The farm buildings are in very good condition. One reason is that the main building burned down in 1962. After the reconstruction, an extensive new and extension program began, which has basically never stopped.

At the end of the 60s, dryers and machine rooms were built. A larger workshop was built in 1988. A first larger piggery was built in 1971. Another piggery was built in 1992. The breeding of slaughter pigs was discontinued in 2004. The stables are now rebuilt and rented out to small businesses. In recent years, measures have been taken to facilitate grain handling. During 2000-2005, the drying and storage facility was modernized and expanded, which is an important part of the continued work with quality assurance of the grain used for food and energy.

In 2012, Wiggeby invested in a compost plant, where the largest part of the incoming horse manure is turned into nutritional improvement for soil production for its own part and for sale to other actors. The second part of the manure is used to a large extent in our crop cultivation as an important part of the phosphorus intake for agriculture. We see the recycling part of our company as a natural part of agriculture. We are constantly looking for synergy effects between these parts of the business. In connection with the facility, we produce various soils for sale, as well as recycling rice and stubble from the community's infrastructure, which is turned into bioenergy that is delivered to our surrounding area.

In 1991, all oil boilers were replaced with a larger straw boiler. In 1994, a straw warehouse was also built. In 2009, a new, larger boiler was installed. The energy supply can thus be regarded as relatively sustainable in terms of heating properties and drying grain. Only green electricity is purchased (water and wind power).

Wiggeby is today run as a company (Wiggeby Jordbruk AB) which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Wiggeby Invest AB which is today owned by the founders Håkan and Teri Lee Eriksson and that from 1 Jan 2015 our long-term employees Jonas Andersson and Jonas Östlund are co-owners. We see it as a first step into the future.

The main focus in crop cultivation is mainly cereals, quality forage for horses, legumes and oilseeds. The goal is that 30% of the area should be pasture and 70% of the crops should be green during the winter, such as winter wheat, rapeseed, pasture and fallow. There are also natural pastures that are grazed by our own animals, which contribute to keeping forest slopes, lakeshores open and, of course, increasing biological diversity in nature. The business also includes contracting activities and some forestry.
