BORAB

We are a municipal company owned by the municipalities of Bollnäs and Ovanåker. We are responsible for the collection, handling, storage and preparation of the municipalities' household waste and operate the waste facility at Sävstaås in Bollnäs, as well as the recycling centers in Bollnäs and Edsbyn.

In addition to our municipal responsibility for household waste, we run a waste facility where we prepare the combustible waste that is left over after source sorting. As a result, we follow the waste hierarchy in accordance with EU directives. The waste is stored, mixed and ground and then converted into energy via, for example, district heating. At the facility, we also prepare waste from many other municipalities and companies in Sweden.

Our business has undergone major changes over the years. Today, we are increasingly a recycling company than the waste company that was opened at Sävstaås in 1984. Today, customers place more and higher demands on us than they did before. Laws and regulations govern how the waste may be handled.

We are expected to have knowledge and competence on how to handle and sort the different fractions in an environmentally friendly way. The customer also wants to know why you should sort and what benefit it does.

In Bollnäs and Ovanåker, we at BORAB are responsible for teaching and informing the residents about how to sort and reduce their waste.

BORAB is a municipal company where ownership is divided between Bollnäs (2/3) and Ovanåker (1/3). The facility is approved by the environmental court. The supervisory authority is the County Administrative Board in Gävleborg.

OUR VISION reminds us of what we strive for and what we want to achieve. We are our municipalities' foremost environmental ambassadors, who pursue issues concerning recycling and the environment.

Our biggest challenge lies in the culture that has been built around what recycling is. Many people today think that recycling is the same as giving the waste value, but recycling is about taking care of the material so that it can become new products over and over again. What we can not recycle or reuse, makes the best use through energy recovery, ie to be converted into fuel, for example for district heating.

Our customers are the ones who have to make the biggest effort to increase the recycling rate. They are the ones who keep the waste and choose which bin they throw it in. But we will do what we can to make it easier for them. By keeping up with technological developments and constantly thinking new, we can make it easy and obvious to recycle - and in that way create conditions for a society where everyone is a recycler.
