CLOOS uses cutting-edge technologies to provide high quality aggregates, essential for the construction and public works sector in Luxembourg. To its in-depth experience acquired over the years, CLOOS has become the leader in the treatment and recycling of stone materials in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. As a result, since its founding in 1902, CLOOS has enjoyed an excellent reputation for its activities in the construction sector.
CLOOS, a partner of ArcelorMittal, specializes in the treatment of blast furnace slag and electric furnace slag (EAF - 'Arcstone ®') at the steelmaker's production sites. The company also operates several natural stone quarries within the Greater Region in order to offer its customers high quality aggregates from various deposits.
History
The CLOOS company was founded in 1902 by Mr. Félix CLOOS senior in Maizières-lès-Metz, then transferred to Esch-sur-Alzette in 1921. With the in-depth experience acquired over the years, CLOOS has become the leading supplier of materials for road and civil construction in Luxembourg. The materials supplied are certified by Ponts & Chaussées and guarantee a constant quality to meet customer demands.
Since its foundation, the CLOOS company has focused on the exploitation and processing of blast furnace slag, by-products from the steel industry. Under contract with ARBED, now ARCELORMITTAL, CLOOS exploited the various dairy deposits in Luxembourg: from 1921 in Esch-sur-Alzette (Crassier Terres Rouges), then in Dudelange between 1922 and 1945.
At the end of the war in 1945, CLOOS undertook the modernization of its facilities to meet the very high demand for materials in order to allow the reconstruction of infrastructure and buildings destroyed in Luxembourg and within the Greater Region.
The exploitation of slag in Differdange began in 1955 and continued in the 1960s and 1970s, in parallel with the exploitation of the slag dumps of Terres Rouges, Belval and Dudelange.
Despite the steel crisis of the 1970s and 1980s, which led to the gradual closure of blast furnaces and therefore the drying up of slag deposits, CLOOS has been able to adapt by diversifying its services and its sources of supply of stony materials:
Exploitation of natural stone quarries: the Luxembourg sandstone quarry in Bridel, the dolomite quarry in Ralingen in Germany (Rabenborner Steingrube), the limestone quarry in Volmerange-les-Mines in France (Roche Blanche SA).
Treatment of slag from electric furnaces (EAF) into aggregates for the construction and civil engineering market.
Setting up of resale platforms for stony materials from our various partners: alluvium and sands from the Rhine, grouine de Meuse, gravel from Moselle, quartzite aggregates, quartzite sandstone aggregates from the Cielle quarry in Belgium, aggregates from hard limestone, ...
Development of material bagging activities at SACAL (big-bags, sacks, etc.).
Services for ArcelorMittal.
Recycling activities for demolition materials.
Operation of landfills for inert waste.
