History

In 1904, a decision was made by a resolution of the Brno City Council to build a waste incinerator. It was the first incinerator in Austria-Hungary based on proven technology from Dortmund and Hanover, Germany, where the ALFONS CUSTODIS combustion system from Vienna was used. The actual construction began in the autumn of 1904, and on August 24, 1905, the Incinerator of the Provincial Capital of Brno produced the first electricity from waste.

A combustion furnace was located in the main building, which had seven combustion chambers in conjunction with a BABCOCK-WILCOX steam boiler with a connection to a PARSON turbine. The incinerator worked 11 hours a day, burning an average of 27.45 tons of waste per day. The incinerator served its purpose until 1941 and was bombed in the last days of World War II. The effort to rebuild the incinerator in the city of Brno dates back to 1946, but it took more than 40 years to implement this plan.
