Compology

The original idea for Compology was to use technology to improve the efficiency of food waste collection so that it could be as ubiquitous as household trash collection. Drawing on Ben’s experience manufacturing sneakers and Jason’s experience in construction, we set up our own food waste collection business in Westchester, NY based out of Jason’s parents’ garage. While hauling food waste, we quickly recognized that waste generators, haulers, processors & regulators all need the same data points about waste and recycling, but each stakeholder needs them for different reasons.

Compology was truly born in 2013 when we realized that by facilitating the collection and distribution of that data, we could make a huge impact on the efficiency and sustainability of the waste and recycling industry!

Over the years, leaders in the trucking, ocean shipping, and rail transportation industries have caught onto Compology’s recipe of combining rugged cameras with artificial intelligence and action-oriented analysis. It’s been an extraordinary experience to collaborate with our customers and partners to rethink Compology’s core technology as a platform, and apply it across several industrial transportation applications.

As we’ve grown from a two-man team working out of a garage into an international, certified B Corporation supporting hundreds of customers, we’ve aimed to stay focused on the long-term welfare of the company, exercise empathy, practice unconditional inclusion, keep things simple and encourage curiosity. We’re humbled every day to work alongside our remarkably talented team – nowhere else is there a group of people better equipped to weather the ups and downs, lefts and rights, of growing a business!

OUR HISTORY

2012

We registered Jason’s parents’ house in Westchester, N.Y. as a commercial composting facility, and began collecting compost from local businesses.

2013

Although we’re East Coasters at heart, we jumped at the opportunity to move to Silicon Valley and join the Lemnos Labs accelerator program.

2014

We deployed with our first customer, UC Santa Cruz, and spent a lot of time inside dumpsters.

2015

With a team of eight, we sped up sales and production to deploy our first 1,000 cameras mostly along the West and East coasts.

2016

We expanded into roll-off containers and started helping customers manage industrial waste like scrap metal and construction and demolition debris.

2017

10,000 cameras deployed!

2018

We attended our 5th WasteExpo, this time inviting our very own Gizmo – a trash panda.

2019

We reached 100,000 cameras on contract and launched into the trucking industry.

2020

We launched broadly in transportation and logistics.

2021

We became a certified B Corp, a testament to our dedication to social and environmental responsibility.
