Biohof Lüssi

Ramsbergstrasse 2, Turbenthal, Zurich, Switzerland | Waste Management

Our family business

We all pull together. Our (grand) parents and we all live and work on the Lüssi organic farm.

We have a stable full of cows, cattle and calves. The farm includes 30 hectares of grassland and 30 (LU) animals. There are also 12 hectares of forest.

The company has been run organically since 1993. (With the bud)

First and foremost, we are farmers. Secondly, organic farmers.

The romanticism of organic farming often has to do with manual labor. Instead of spraying a weed or other pest with a herbicide, you have to do it mechanically. Snails in the vegetable garden are fought with scissors and chickens, piles of branches provide hiding places for the useful hedgehogs. Instead of giving antibiotics to a cow, attempts are made to cure an udder infection with homeopathic doses and repeated daily and nightly milking. The fertilization smells aromatic and is more difficult to handle than artificial fertilizers: manure, slurry, compost.

We are proud and happy not to have to buy artificial fertilizers and pesticides. It is a typical peculiarity of organic farming compared to intensive cultivation to accept a loss of yield. Organic farming is a matter of attitude. We adhere to the organic guidelines. When diseases, pests, etc. appear, a solution is sought with home remedies and handicrafts. In the case of severe persistence or danger, conventional medicine, for example, may also be used in consultation with the veterinarian.

Basically, in the past 20 years, organic has learned not to get the most out of plants and animals and thus have healthier soils and animals.
