Richi AG

In the Riesentobel 1, Weiningen, Zurich, Switzerland | Waste Management

Family-owned since 1924

The history of the Richi company goes back to the beginning of the 20th century.

How it all started once

In addition to farming, Johann Richi ran a simple gravel pit in the Riesentobel in Weininger Feld in 1924. From then on he describes himself as a gravel supplier.

Gravel was delivered by horse and cart in the area and as far as Zurich. The first petrol-powered Berna truck was used as early as 1929. This was in operation until 1964 and drove over 2 million kilometers.

1931 Founding of the 'Richi gravel suppliers' brothers and sisters. In the Riesentobel, mechanization and hand-operated gravel systems were now being built on an ongoing basis. This was followed by several gravel works that were continuously adapted to the state of the art.

At the time, the office was in Jakob Richi's private house on the “Bühl”. The trucks were stationed on the farm on Zürcherstrasse.

After the 2nd World War, the first company buildings were built on the excavation floor of the gravel pit, where today's office building stands.

In 1959, Richi + Co., Kies- und Sandwerke Weiningen was founded.

In the early 1960s, the work yard and the office were relocated to the pit in Riesentobel.

Excavation and earthworks began in the mid-1960s. The incentive was to fill the open gravel pits with excavated material.

Only hesitantly did they begin to bring excavated material back to Weiningen with their own trucks. At that time, this task was assigned to “lower ranks”.

The first idea of the material cycle was born over 50 years ago.

Following the boom of the 1960s, there was now strong expansion into construction machinery and trucks.

An efficient dump service was offered.

Since gravel mining in Weiningen was soon exhausted, the gravel pits in Künten-Sulz AG and Würenlos AG were opened up in 1965.

In 1978 the company already had 40 employees, 20 trucks and 15 construction machines. The first 18 + 45 tonnes of pneumatic cranes were offered to customers as a service supplement.

1985 saw the entry into the concrete business with the construction of the Zurich-Herdern concrete plant.

After an approval process that lasted more than a decade, the expansion of the Weiningen plant began in 2003.

In 2009, Richi + Co. was converted into Richi AG. The company remains 100% family-owned.
