Stone extraction has a long tradition in Zirl: Zirl limestone has been extracted industrially since the 19th century. The production of quicklime, which had been the priority in earlier years, was discontinued around 1960 and the lime kiln was dismantled.

After the end of the quarrying , the former quarry is to be filled with harmless material (rubble, excavated soil and excavated tunnels) and recultivated . The optically striking impression of the high rock walls should be reduced by the highest possible bulk body and the area below the quarry should be permanently secured.
