The Integrated Waste Management Facility
The IWMF is located in an industrial area close to the river Humber between Grimsby and Immingham. The facility commenced operation in 2003.
The IWMF accepts Municipal waste from North East Lincolnshire. Hazardous or clinical wastes are not accepted.
Operations and maintenance activities are contracted to Grimsby Operations Ltd (a subsidiary of Tiru)
The IWMF comprises of, Energy from Waste (EfW) plant and Material Reclamation Facility (MRF).
The EfW Plant comprises of a combined heat and power plant designed to combust 56,000 tonnes of Municipal waste per year.
Energy from waste (EfW) is the thermal treatment of municipal solid waste (MSW) under controlled conditions, recovering renewable energy in the form of electricity and heat. The IWMF supplies the neighbouring factory with energy equivalent to the electricity used by 10,000 families.
The EfW plant is operated in compliance with the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations monitored by the Environment Agency.
The MRF facility provides for the storage and handling of glass, steel, aluminium, paper, cardboard and plastic before onward transportation to recycling centres; also the shredding of green waste such as leaves and general garden waste.
