Volz and Herbert!

The family company Volz has been a partner to the construction industry for more than 100 years. The one-man business from back then has grown into a stately company over the years that still operates a trucking business, but the focus is on sand and gravel works and the building materials trade.

Today's company 'Volz und Herbert GmbH' deals with the extraction, processing and distribution of sand and gravel, the sale of crushed stone, chippings, granules, recycling products, materials for the shell construction, products for landscaping such as superstructures or Top soil, compost, bark mulch, ornamental gravel and boulders.

Volz and Herbert is the competent partner of the construction industry.

History

The foundation stone of the company's history was laid in 1899 by Sebastian Volz, who at that time bought a steam engine in addition to the forge he operated in Hörstein in order to operate the contract threshing business with the device. In addition to the blacksmith's trade and contract threshing, Sebastian Volz also worked in the haulage business. Over the years, the steam engine was also used to drive a frame saw in Dettinger Straße.

In 1918, Sebastian Volz handed over the business to his sons Adalbert and Andreas. From 1919 the brothers operated under the name Gebrüder Volz OHG. From 1926 to 1928 the company supplied the construction company Richard Becker with sand for the new road construction Hörstein - Hohl. The first business of Gebrüder Volz OHG in the raw material extraction industry.

At that time, the material was mined by hand with a shovel and pick in the Hörsteiner district “Im Sand”. Horse-drawn carts and tractors from Deutz and Lanz were responsible for the transport to the construction site.

The first gravel pit was opened near Kleinostheim around 1930. The raw gravel was first extracted with a pick and shovel, later a scraper - a towing bucket pulled with a cable winch - was used for extraction. This device was bought by Karl Freppon and assembled by Christian Gräbner from Hörstein.

The dark times of World War II also left their mark on the Volz Brothers company. Andreas Volz was called up, but fortunately only had to do military service for a short time. The Wehrmacht, however, confiscated a truck including the driver Alois Bott during the war years. Mr. Bott did not return home, the vehicle was lost.

1952 - Modern times! The dismantling was now carried out with a bucket chain excavator, lorries were pulled from a diesel locomotive to the loading bridge to transport the raw material. At the beginning of the 1960s, the company was converted into a limited partnership. The Volz brothers KG was born.

Heinz Volz, son of Adalbert Volz, and Engelbert Herbert, son-in-law of Andreas Volz, were leaders in the coming years. In 1963, the third gravel deposit was opened in the Hörstein “Nachtweide” corridor near Kahl am Main. The extraction was now done by a dredger, which transferred the raw gravel to conveyor belts. These brought the conveyed goods ashore and into the processing plant.

The preparation and classification was carried out with a sand auger and sieving machines. The finished product was stored in specially built silos until it was loaded onto trucks.

In 1983 a new subsidiary was founded to replace the old business model. Karl-Heinz Herbert, son of Engelbert Herbert, took over the shares from Heinz Volz and his father and founded Volz und Herbert GmbH.

In 1993, the expansion of the drinking water protection area of the long-distance water supply group forced the company to move to the mining site 'Am hinter Schiffweg' near Dettingen, which has been in use since 1983. The “Nachtweide” mine has been closed and recultivated since the end of 1993.

From 1994 onwards, the company Volz und Herbert GmbH, based in Hörstein in the Hörstein district “Am hinter Schiffweg”, has been collecting gravel, processing the raw material and supplying building contractors and private customers in the region with mineral building materials. The company premises can be reached via the Alzenau industrial area Alzenau-Süd. Renate Ritter-Herbert, the wife of Karl-Heinz Herbert, takes over the management.

Sebastian Herbert has been involved in the company since 2013, and in 2015 he took over the management from his mother, Renate Ritter-Herbert.

A new chapter in the company's history was opened.
