In the 1950s, a young Frans van den Mosselaar started collecting waste paper from private individuals and companies. He uses the money he earned with that to buy his first truck. This was a three-wheeled Tempo. It was the family's first car. There are three-wheeled Tempos in possession, all with different container structures. Do you or do you happen to know a three-wheeled Tempo let us know ...
The purchase of a number of Citroen's from the 1930s in the late 1970s was the first step into the world of antique cars. The collection was expanded with various other brands. Frans van de Mosselaar Antique Automobielen BV was founded in the 1980s. He also provided antique vehicles for the film industry for decades.
Frans started to demolish cars around 1966. He has built this up over the years into one of the Netherlands' largest car dismantling / car recycling companies .
The story of Frans van den Mosselaar
When I was 7, I already went through the doors to collect waste paper for the school. We had been doing that for about 1.5 years until my father told a company about 'that mess that is on our place.' My father got a response that changed everything! 'That's not a mess, waste paper yields 15 cents per kilo.' The 1000 kilos that we collected per week suddenly got a new perspective. With the pram (which I have been lying in myself) we kept collecting the paper, but then for ourselves. We made more from collecting paper than our father from his factory job.
When I was 19 (in 1966) I continued alone and the old paper had meanwhile been expanded with scrap iron and old cars. I started with a small hall and an outdoor space of 500 m2. I went to pick up old cars in the street, because people asked if I could do something with them. At first I couldn't do much with it, but after I collected more than 30 cars, people started asking about the parts. This resulted in the fact that a 50 guilders car was worth about 800 guilders in parts.
Once the business was up and running, I boarded a plane with a colleague to America. A special adventure for that time. We didn't speak the language, had no idea where to go and came back the first time with a lot of experience and a bag of money less. But we learned quickly, so the subsequent trips to America brought in money. We saw the trade in old cars and parts and dared to look beyond our own borders.
For over 15 years we have demolished old cars and removed parts. At one point we had so much stock that we could deliver parts immediately. Then we continued with parts for young cars.
