Twente Milieu

Marssteden 37, Enschede, Overijssel, Netherlands | Waste Collection & Disposal

General information

Twente Milieu is an NV, in which 100 percent of the shares are owned by nine municipalities in Twente for which it works: Almelo, Borne, Enschede, Haaksbergen, Hengelo, Hof van Twente, Losser, Oldenzaal and Wierden.

Our original core task is the collection of household waste. This core task has now been expanded to include the management of waste flows and the management of public space.

With 350 committed and driven employees, most of whom work in the field, we are visible and recognizable every day in the living environment of nearly 500,000 residents of Twente. A large employer that offers opportunities to many people at a distance from the labor market (20 percent of the workforce). The slogan 'clean, healthy and fresh' is actually taking shape in the living environment of the residents of the shareholding municipalities through the efforts of Twente Milieu. We take care of waste and perform many tasks in the management of public space. Also when it comes to the handling of questions / complaints and the use of communication and education. We also provide advice on municipal policy and contribute to environmental awareness and sustainability objectives in the region.

Strategy 2020-2023

Over the past four years, we have worked hard on the four strategic spearheads from 'Better from scratch 2016-2019'. Major steps have been taken, but the strategy has not been completed and still contains many elements that have also been given a place in the future. The basis is in order, but it is also subject to a lot of change. On the one hand due to the changes that are coming our way externally, such as climate change, digitization, the changing role of the government and increased attention to sustainability and circularity. On the other hand also due to changes in (waste) policy and growth in the size and nature of activities, for example due to the entry of the municipality of Haaksbergen.

The Twente Milieu area will continue to evolve in the coming years. The policy fields of waste collection and management of public space are constantly changing and very dynamic. New techniques, wishes and changes in budget have an influence on the products and services that Twente Milieu provides. The role of Twente Milieu is changing and it also influences the ambitions that form the strategy for the coming years.

Twente Milieu is owned by nine Twente municipalities and is explicitly looking for cooperation to achieve goals in the areas of living environment, (social) employment and circularity together. To be a reliable partner in this field, we formulated three ambitions that form the basis for the next four years. Twente Milieu wants to add value to its clients and shareholders by achieving synergy from waste collection and management of public space. Deposit alliance

Twente Milieu stands for a clean, healthy and fresh Twente. Together with our shareholding municipalities and residents, we are working towards a 'Zero waste Twente by 2030'. The prevention of litter makes an important contribution to this. That is why we join the Depositiegeldalliantie, just like our shareholding municipalities.

Bottles and cans make up a large part of the litter. By assigning a financial value to the cans and bottle (deposit), residents are more aware of these materials. As a result, fewer cans and bottles end up in the public space. In addition, bottles and cans that do end up in public spaces are disposed of earlier and faster due to the deposit. In this way, more cans and bottles are collected. These can be processed circularly into new products.

Deposit on cans and bottles therefore contributes to the Twente Waste Vision in various ways: up to 50 kilos of residual waste per inhabitant per year by 2030.

Lean and green

Twente Milieu has the Lean and Green Award for its CO2 objectives in the field of logistics. This allows us to call ourselves a leader in sustainable logistics. Twente Milieu wants to save 20 percent on CO2 emissions. To achieve this, we do the following: the drivers are trained in 'The New Driving', the logistics processes are improved and technical adjustments are made to the equipment.

Lean and Green Award With the Lean and Green Award, companies show that they are making an active effort to make their logistics process more sustainable. The Lean and Green Award is awarded on the basis of a written plan, in which concrete CO2 targets are set and KPIs (Critical Performance Indicators) are determined. By taking measures that not only save costs, but at the same time also reduce the environmental impact, the Lean and Green Award stimulates companies to grow to a higher level of sustainability. Participating companies receive the Lean and Green Award and after achieving the goal the Lean and Green Label.

Work suit quality mark

The municipality of Enschede awards the Werkpakt quality mark to employers who explicitly distinguish themselves through social entrepreneurship. The municipality issues the Werkpakt hallmark to employers who, together with the municipality and other partners, demonstrably contribute to sustainable solutions for jobseekers at a distance from the labor market (SW workers, long-term unemployed, etc.) and act as ambassadors and involved partner.

PSO step 3

Twente Milieu scores step 3 on the Performance Ladder Socialer Ondernemen (PSO) and we are proud of that! The PSO is TNO's scientifically based measuring instrument and hallmark that objectively measures and makes visible the degree of social entrepreneurship. The independent assessment by a certifying body shows that Twente Milieu offers high-quality employment to people at a distance from the labor market.

Sustainable Vehicles and Fuels Covenant

Twente Milieu signed the Sustainable Vehicles and Fuels in the Cleaning Industry covenant in October 2019. This covenant contains agreements on cleaner transport with the ultimate goal of an emission-free vehicle fleet. As an organization that strives for a clean, healthy and fresh Twente, we find it extremely important to play a role in reducing CO2 emissions. We want to set an example in this and demonstrate our social commitment. From Rotterdam we hear good experiences with the first electric garbage truck. The cars are not only cleaner for the city. It also has advantages for employees, who work day in and day out in and around the vehicles. We find that very important.
