Day Group Ltd
Transport Ave, Brentford, Greater London, United Kingdom | Waste recycling
Day Group Ltd handles over three million tonnes of construction material each year, as well as providing services to the construction, demolition and water treatment industries.
Day Aggregates, Day Contracting and Day Equestrian are amongst the divisions that make up the Group.
Our History
The original company, Day & Sons Ltd, was established by the late John Day, who delivered coal to London's power stations, businesses and homes during the Second World War. The company was incorporated in 1947. By 1955 the Company had outgrown its site in Hanworth and moved to a British Rail Goods Yard at Brentford where its Headquarters is still based today.
In 1974 this railhead enabled limestone to be railed into London, for the first time on a regular basis, directly from Foster Yeoman's Torr Works quarry in Somerset. This, together with the demise of coal for power stations, businesses and homes shaped the future of Day Group. Over the subsequent years further railheads and wharves have been acquired throughout South London, Surrey, Sussex and Kent, giving the Company unparalleled coverage of its marketing area.
Day Contracting
Since the 1960's Day Contracting has been providing services to the construction, demolition and water treatment industries throughout the United Kingdom.
London Concrete
In 1997, together with partners from within the ready mixed concrete industry, the Company established London Concrete Ltd. Now owned by Holcim, it has rapidly grown into one of the major suppliers of concrete in the London area but, with plants in several of Day Aggregates' depots and close management and sales ties, London Concrete remains an important customer and a close partner.
Further Acquisitions
2005 saw further investment with the purchase of CJ Burgess, Rother Cartage (South East) Ltd, and DJ Christmas Ltd. These family-run businesses, based in Sussex, offered an ideal opportunity to fulfil the Group's ambitions for an increased presence in the bagging of materials, in bulk haulage and in supplying the builders' merchant trade.
In 2011 the Group's heavy goods vehicle fleet expanded further with the purchase of Lavers Transport Ltd, based near Sevenoaks in Kent.
In 2013 Day Group expanded its aggregates bagging business with the acquisition of Aggregate Supplies operations at Acton in West London, Southampton and Warmwell in Dorset along with the supply of materials from two other operations in Bristol and Gravesend, Kent. This acquisition made Day Group one of the top four bagged aggregates suppliers in the UK.
Acquisition of Sand and Aggregates Limited's Merchanting business in December 2013 further enhanced the Day Group product offering and service provision.
Day Equestrian
This division was formed in 2012, providing construction materials and expert services specifically targeted at the Equestrian sector.
Environmental Concerns
Day Group's activities reflect environmental concerns over the use of landfill sites and quarries and the associated transport. To that end, major investments have been made in state of the art recycling plants, railheads and wharves. The philosophy of meeting society's need for construction materials in a responsible manner, whilst maintaining a traditionally high quality of service, inspires confidence that the Company will continue to thrive as an independent business.
