Subsea Cable End Of Life

Green environmental policies and the move to renewable energy alternatives are accelerating North Sea Platform decommissioning.

The process of platform infrastructure decommissioning will take decades to complete and result in millions of tons of redundant equipment; a large part which is subsea cabling. Various types of steel, copper and aluminium alloys are simply reprocessed as raw materials for reuse with very little waste. The challenge for platform and subsea equipment owners and operators is finding solutions that deal with traditionally unrecyclable and contaiminated waste.

Muti-core and multi-walled, subsea cables such as risers, flow lines and umbilicals are manufactured to high specifications to withstand challenging operating environments. High density plastic compounds form a major part of these cable types construction; which, at end of life, require extremely specialised processes for material separation, decontamination and polymer reprocessing. K2 Polymers are the UK's acknowledged number one subsea cable reprocessors and we work closley with North Sea Oil and Gas partners to provide solutions that reduce, or eliminate, the burden of landfill cost.
