The Hanielstrasse location was energetically renovated and expanded. This also made it possible to relocate the city cleaning and winter service department to Hanielstrasse.

Sustainable goals

Investments and innovations are necessary in order to be able to offer high-quality disposal services at affordable and stable prices in the future. For this reason, the USB is increasingly focusing on the development of environmentally friendly and climate-protecting technologies. The aim is to make the value chain for waste - consisting of collection, processing and recycling - efficient and profitable. When it comes to landfill follow-up use, the focus is on regenerative energies: solar systems generally do not have any special requirements for local conditions. All you need are sufficiently large open spaces. The installation of powerful photovoltaic systems is therefore a promising model for the future. Solar power systems relieve the network at important consumption times.

Economically, ecologically and socially

USB Bochum is responsible for waste disposal and city cleaning in Bochum. Central tasks are the promotion of waste avoidance, the extraction of materials and energy from waste and the disposal of waste. The USB thus makes an active contribution to environmental protection and the quality of life in Bochum. Year after year, the more than 600 employees collect, recycle and dispose of around 170,000 tons of waste and clean streets and sidewalks of around 5,300 kilometers in length every week. Thanks to sustainable corporate management, the USB meets the highest economic, ecological and social demands.

Certificate of waste management company
The USB has been certified by the EdDE in accordance with the requirements of the Ordinance on Waste Management Companies (EfbV) since 1998,  and in annual audits it demonstrates the correct, legally compliant and environmentally friendly handling of waste.

Certificate of quality management
In addition, USB has been certified according to DIN EN ISO 9001 'Quality Management Systems' since 2009 (the automotive workshop area since 2003). The objective is to recognize and meet customer requirements, to continuously check the service provided and to continuously improve its quality through process optimization.

Energy management certificate
An energy management system in accordance with DIN EN ISO 50001 “Energy Management Systems” was introduced and successfully certified in 2013 in order to promote the conscious use of resources and to minimize energy consumption or to increase energy efficiency. Since then, the requirements of ISO 50001 have been an integral part of our management system, but continuous certification is not required.

Also without certification, modules of OHSAS 18001 'Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems' were integrated into our management system in order to protect and maintain the safety and health of our employees as best as possible. A successful pre-audit in 2011 confirmed the conformity.

Our combined management system is checked annually by external and internal auditors and continuously developed within the company.
