Hamilton Waste & Recycling Ltd

Carberry Road , Musselburgh East, Lothian, Scotland, United Kingdom | Waste Management

Hamilton Waste & Recycling Ltd was incorporated in 2002 when the Hamilton family purchased the long established firm of Wm Finlayson & Sons.  Since 2002 the company has rapidly grown to one of the largest independent waste management companies in Scotland.

Since Hamilton Waste & Recycling Ltd was established there has been key legislation to encourage recycling. The National Waste Plan was launched by SEPA and the Scottish Executive in February 2003.  This outlines how we can achieve increased levels of recycling and an overall reduction in the amount of waste we produce by 2020. Furthermore Zero Waste Scotland’s plan is to recycle 70% of all waste in Scotland by 2025.  The legislation along with landfill tax increases are important milestones in helping Scotland become a Zero Waste Country.  This is positive when you consider that in 2008 Scotland produced 19.5 million tonnes of waste. That’s enough to fill an Olympic sized swimming pool every 10 minutes.

As a leading waste management company in Scotland, we are committed to helping achieve these targets through our own system of waste management and environmental policy ensuring that only the minimum tonnage of waste is actually sent to landfill.

Based in the Edinburgh, East and West Lothian area, we operate three transfer and recycling stations in the region. In 2014 we opened up our Smeaton Transfer and Recycling Station which is a 15 acre state of the art development that Hamilton Waste & Recycling Ltd started in 2011. As can be see from the below picture the investment we have made in Smeaton shows the commitment we are continually making to recycling our customers waste.

Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste as well as Commercial and Industrial (C&I) waste is brought into the three sites mostly from our vehicles but also from our customer vehicles. The waste is tipped, and separated into the different streams through, mostly mechanical separation before going into a picking station where separation is done manually.

The following wastes are segregated into their different streams before being further processed and sold onto the final markets. Our final recycled products are as follows:

  • Recycled Aggregate in the form of 6F5 crusher run and type 1
  • Shredded Wood which is sold on to wood board manufacturers, biomass and animal bedding.
  • Ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal sold to scrap metal merchants.
  • Baled paper & cardboard sold to end markets.
  • Baled plastics sold to end markets.
  • Screened Topsoil sold to landscaping companies.
  • Composted green waste for agricultural fertiliser.
  • Plasterboard made into recycled gypsum for agricultural application.

We have invested heavily in waste management processing and recycling technology at our transfer stations, which ensures that as much waste as possible is recycled and diverted from landfill.

Through this investment, we are at the forefront of recycling technology and processes in Scotland.

We are fully committed to investing in new equipment and technology to recycle as much waste as possible while diverting this material away from landfill.
