 Product Description:

America’s First Silver Pocket Change

On September 2, 1776, Thomas Jefferson recommended to Congress that the new country should adopt silver Spanish milled coinage as our monetary unit of value. Congress agreed, making the 2 Reales Spanish Silver coin America’s First Silver Pocket Change. The reason why they chose it was because Spanish coins were the currency used everywhere around the world to buy and sell goods. We know America's first silver pocket change from pirate legends, as it was also the most sought-after coinage by those who stole them from everybody else! The consistency of the Spanish silver coins was highly prized. These were the types of coins Jefferson, Franklin and Washington carried in their pockets! We were very happy to find a small number authenticated from the sunken treasure ship El Cazador, which went down in the Gulf of Mexico in 1784. Each is certified Genuine by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) and is dated 1783, the year the Revolutionary War officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris.
