New Ordinance Aims to Curb Scrap Metal Thefts in Denver

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Officials in Denver anticipate that the new rule will assist the city reduce the increasing number of scrap metal theft instances. Denver City Councilman Darrell Watson presented the bill, which aims to curb the city's widespread scrap metal thefts that have an adverse effect on public infrastructure and local company operations.

Catalytic converter theft instances have decreased as a result of a previous local law. According to estimations, since the ordinance's adoption, the occurrence rate has decreased by 95%. With the implementation of the new rule, the city authorities anticipate a similar crackdown on thefts of scrap metal.

The stipulations of the new regulation states that anyone selling scrap metal will have to produce official identification as proof. All transactions must be meticulously documented by the scrap metal traders. The ordinance also prohibits cash payments and walk-up transactions.

Up to 33 copper wire thefts were reported by the Regional Transportation District (RTD) in the previous year alone, resulting in losses exceeding $40,000. Since August 2022, RTD's infrastructure has sustained damages totaling about $150,000, excluding the financial impact of service cancellations and delays. Theft of scrap metal has also resulted in significant losses for private companies.
