Georgetown Co. Officials Hopeful About Future Development of Former Paper Mill Site

While there may be some community concern online about potential redevelopment, officials said there are no specific business or industry plans confirmed at this time.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Georgetown County and the City of Georgetown are looking ahead at the future of the former International Paper Mill property.

Even though the site is privately owned and no official redevelopment plans have been announced, the site holds a large potential for economic growth and job creation.

Georgetown officials said they are optimistic about the future to support opportunities that will benefit the community.

“We look forward to future discussions with prospective developers or companies about the property’s next chapter. While the zoning currently allows for heavy industrial use, our focus remains on economic development and job creation that aligns with community needs,' said Georgetown County Council Chairman, Clint Elliott.

While there may be some community concern online about potential redevelopment, officials said there are no specific business or industry plans confirmed at this time.

International Paper had been a staple of the Georgetown community for nearly 90 years. The closure impacted more than 670 employees when the closure was announced in late 2024.

Georgetown County is working with local, regional and state partners to assist workers who are now out of jobs, according to the release. The focus for the Georgetown community is creating new employment to attract investment.
