Hyundai Planning Steel Mill in Ascension Parish Near Donaldsonville

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported South Korean automotive manufacturer Hyundai plans to build a steel mill in Ascension Parish near Donaldsonville, citing sources familiar with the project.

The steel mill would supply the Hyundai and Kia vehicle assembly plants in the U.S., per the publication's report.

According to the article, several parish officials and the governor declined comment.

Local officials have hinted at a potential project in the works for the RiverPlex MegaPark, a 17,000-acre industrial zone located west of Donaldsonville on the west bank of the Mississippi River within roughly a 40-mile radius of Baton Rouge.

Ascension Economic Development Corp. has touted the land for its proximity to the industrial corridor, the Sunshine Bridge and the railroad, among other amenities.

Much of the land along the bend in the river from Donaldsonville to the Iberville Parish line is rural and currently is used by most to grow sugarcane.

The Korea Economic Daily, a business newspaper in South Korea, reported Hyundai was considering building its first overseas steel mill in New Orleans, citing industry sources.

The company reportedly has been looking at Louisiana, along with Texas and Georgia.

Per the publication, Hyundai officials confirmed they were reviewing the construction of a steel mill in the U.S. but declined to provide additional details.

According to the South Korean newspaper, the project could break ground as early as spring 2026 and finish by 2029.
