Canada Plastics Pact Declared Incremental Progress on 2025 Goals

The report released by CPP pointed out that it has made incremental progress on its goal to recycle or compost at least 50% of all plastic packaging.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  The Canada Plastic Pact (CPP) reported slower than anticipated progress on its previously stated 2025 targets in its 2023–2024 impact report. These goals include designing goods with more recycled content and reducing the use of hazardous plastic packaging.

According to the CPP report, it has achieved small strides toward its objective of recycling or composting at least half of all plastic packaging. It should be mentioned that, in contrast to the 20% recycling rate stated in the 2022 impact report, the 2022 recycling rate for plastic packaging was just 16%.

In the related Plastic Packaging Flow report, CPP noted that Canada’s deposit return system had a 60% recycling rate in 2022, down by 3% from 2019. The rate for residential sector held steady at 16%.

In 2022, the nation produced 1.96 million metric tons of plastic packaging, a 3.6% increase over 2019. Additionally, in 2022, Canada produced 17% more hard plastic packaging and recycled 2% less of it. In contrast to 2019, it produced 6% less flexible plastic and recycled 13% more of it in 2022.

In order to fulfill its objective and realize its vision, additional work must be done, according to CPP President and Board Chair Catherine O'Brien.
